2007 Wayne County Lake Ontario Pro-Am
WAYNE COUNTY FINAL RESULTSLake Ontario was pulling no punches, July 14th, the second day of the Wayne County Lake Ontario Salmon and Trout Team Tournament; however Captain Greg Gehrig’s Top Gun Team rode-out the 7 footers and with some last hour maneuvers, came in with an impressive box of kings to win the Pro Division of the lake wide contest. Gehrig, from Oswego, and crew nearly matched their first day score of 276.05 when the second day was tallied at 276.75. The two day score was an impressive 552.80, netting Team Top Gun a $10,117 cash and prize package. Gehrig said he changed his strategy 2 hours before the tournament ended. “I caught some nice kings, fishing 6 miles west of Sodus Bay, he said. We continued our trolling, heading east with the waves, and caught nothing. I decided to pick-up and return to our original location.” The Captain headed back into the nasty Lake Ontario waves, set-up and boxed two more kings, and still had time to make the Sodus Point Pier heads by 2pm, the tournament’s official finish time. During practice, Gehrig’s program was flies in the morning and spoons for the afternoon, however during the competition the game plan was altered, “I started with the flies, but nothing hit, and after 45 minutes I changed everything to Michigan Stinger spoons,” he said. “I fished in water between 140 and 200 feet the entire two days. Most the fish came deep.” Second Place in the 2007 Wayne County Pro-Am was Team Thrillseeker with Captain Vince Pierleoni’s team bringing in a total of 22 fish over the two day tournament. The Captain took home a total value $4,878 cash and prize package. Second Place Amateur Division winner was Screamer/A-Tom-Mik with Captain Dave Antenori running the show. The Lake Ontario Pro-Am started in Orleans County Memorial Day weekend, moved to Niagara, followed by Oswego, and finished at Sodus Point on July 14th and 15. Teams also compete for the Challenge Cup, which is presented to the team with the most points scored for the four port series. During the 2007 event teams had the choice of fishing the Best of the East Cup and the Best of the West End Cup, in addition to the overall Challenge. After all points were tabulated, Pro Team Top Gun walked away with the Challenge Cup by an accumulated score of 1099 points.
