Salmon River, Oak Orchard, Oswego River, Oneida Lake, Niagara River, Fishing Report 12/19/07
What a week to be steelhead fishing. Only a few people and plenty of hot fresh fish to be found. Temps going into the 30's and maybe 40 by the weekend. You should be here fishing. Egg sacs in pink and white are taking most of our fish.
Dan Southwick with a few nice steelhead.
The Oswego continues to produce good numbers of browns and steelhead. Drfitboats guides working that river have posted reports of 30 to 40 fish days. Ice will become a problem if it stays cold, so use caution and work the edges with eggs and small white jigs.
Oneida lake walleye are on the bite but getting to them is now the tough part. There is no safe ice yet and open water fisherman are out of luck as the edges are froze and slush is a problem. I got reports of 22 to 24 inch fish being caught on a daily basis, when you can fish. Again, don't take a chance on thin ice. It is just a fish and not worth your life!

We have received approximately 1 to 1 1/2 feet of snow over the weekend. The snowfall and has not head much affect on the Oak Orchard River or the Genesee River. As for the other area streams, they remain frozen up and they will remain that way for some time to come
The water flow for the Oak Orchard is slowly rising. The increase in water flow has not been enough to plow in new fish yet. This will change soon, and the fishing will pick up. For now there is good streamer and jig fishing in the slow water of the Oak Orchard for spawned out Brown trout. Here any color is good as long as it is white. As for the upper portion of the Oak, there are a few Brown trout spread throw out, down river from the dam. For fishing to these fish in this part of the River use, small egg flies size 12 or 10 and light tippits.
The Genesee River – The water flow is starting to come down. The river is right in the edge of fishing. The water flow is fluctuating, some days you can fish it – some days you can not. The water flow is too high for the fly guys but the center pin guys are getting in to a few Steelheads using egg sack and jigs. As the water flows continue to drop the fishing will improve on the Genesee River.

Oak and 18 mile are low but rainbows and browns are still available to those who work for them. The niagara has cleared and steelhead action is good primarily Artpark and Jackson drifts using Kwickfish plugs in silver red dot and brass /chartreuse on three way rigs .Spawn sacs with chartreuse netting and floaties have had their moments. My best fish steelhead -wise have been around 12 lbs. Even though lake trout have been closed, I was recently on the Niagara bar with minnows and found scattered browns and lakers in 35 ft of water .The best brown was 11 lbs that day but lakers we monsters with three at 19 to 23lbs. All three way rigs were leadered with 8lb test Gama floro and BlackBird Sabertooth Hooks size # 8 for sacs and #6 for certified golden shiners.
