Salmon River, Oak Orchard, Oswego River, Oneida Lake, Fishing Report 1/28/08
We have had just enough cold air to make some ice on the lakes and bays to the north.
I would still be very careful when going out on to the ice and check the thickness as you go.
Anglers making the run to Chaumont Bay have been rewarded with some great catches of nice size perch. Small minnows and jigs in 8 to 12 feet of water are working well. Black Lake also has good ice but that lake is about an hour and a half drive from here.
Look for good ice just about everywhere for the weekend.
On the salmon river steelhead are scattered from top to bottom and the fishing has been good. Cover a lot of water and try downisizing your egg sacs. It seems they like the smaller ones bettter. Don’t be afraid to fish wax worms or meal worms under a float.
The Oswego river has plenty of fish as well. White jigs and pink eggs are working best.
Western New York fishing report by Jay Peck – www.jaypeckguides.com
The water flow on the Oak Orchard River has dropped down to a low and clear flow. This is typical for the Oak when the winter weather turns cold. There are still a few fish around, but the fishing is tough. For now, streamer and jig fishing in the slow water of the Oak Orchard for spawned out Brown trout. Here any color is good as long as it is white. As for the upper portion of the Oak, there are a few Brown trout and steelhead, spread throwout down river from the dam. For fishing to these fish in this part of the River use, small egg flies size 12 or 10 and light tippits.
The big change is with the Genesee River. The cold weather is giving the river a chance for the water flow to come down. As of now the Genesee River is still a little high to fish, but the river is dropping. The way it looks, give the river a few days and we may be able to fish. The Genesee River has not been fished in over a month. Once we can get can get on the river, the fishing should be as good as it gets. A word of warning, there may be some shelf ice. The ice may not be strong enough to stand on.
A nice chromer that SFC Randy Bell landed right after his recent return from IRAQ.
Dan Southwick with one of many steelhead he has caught.
