Salmon River, Lake Ontario, Oak Orchard, Oswego River, Oneida Lake, Fishing Report

The salmon run on the Salmon River is starting to wind down. While there are still plenty of salmon to play with in the upper river, many are looking rough and it is time to think about trout. There is a slow trickle of steelhead coming through the river and the creeks that have water, like the Oak and 18 mile are starting to see good numbers of brown trout and still have plenty of clean salmon for your entertainment. It is the same ole story, if we get some more rain all the streams will get more fish.

90% of the salmon are on the gravel spawning and that is where you will find 90% of the anglers.

The gravel is very busy and crowded as there is still a lot of people here that enjoy this type of fishing.

Please remember, just because you are targeting trout, it is still salmon season and most of the salmon guys will still walk through the middle of the holes and cast heavy weight and spook the trout you are trying to catch. Be patient, give it a few more weeks and it will be your turn.

As for the trout, look for them behind the spawning Chinooks and at the very heads and tail outs of the pools. They are here looking for eggs and rotten flesh from the dead salmon. Blue eggs and troutbeads in glo-roe and sun orange are taking all of our fish right now.

Below are a few photos from this week.

Lucky Eric was up for another adventure. Landing percentage was horrible this day, but we had plenty of chances. He will be back in a month for revenge!

Check this out.

Vince booked a salmon drift trip when he was up this summer on the lake charter. I asked him in the morning if he wanted to learn how to float fish for trout instead and he said sure! He was a machine. He immediately picked up the drift and was into double figures by noon. A day for Kings!!
