Oswego Pro-Am Press Release and Results
Trout One and Fishchopper Take Top Honors at the 12th Annual Health Imaging Oswego County Pro-Am Tournament
By Troy Creasy
For the second straight year, clear skies, bright sun, warm temperatures, light winds and good fishing, greeted the 71 teams that came to the ports of Mexico and Oswego, for the 12th Annual Oswego County Pro-Am Salmon and Trout Team Tournament.
While many teams struggled with warm water and strong underwater currents, many put together some awesome catches of big chrome kings and plump brown trout.
Taking top honors in the Pro division and walking away with a record 1st place prize package worth over $10,300, was Team Trout One, from Adams Mass.
Capt. Jim Carpenter fishing out of Mikes Marina in Mexico, with a boat he just purchased two weeks ago, told his team, "The only way we can beat the Oswego boys is to take a chance and make a long run to the north and fish the trench area outside of Henderson Harbor where he heard there was a school of heavyweight Chinooks just waiting to be caught".
The run paid off and Team Trout One weighted in the most impressive catch of day one with eleven fish totaling 265.61 points!
In the Amateur division it was team Fishchopper led by Kevin Keller from Liverpool NY, fishing out of Oswego (Ironically in Trout One's old boat) who after struggling on day one with just one fish, made some changes and bounced back to take the lead and another record payout for the amateur division of $6,290 in cash and prizes. Their final score was an impressive 262.23.
Second place in the Pro division went to team Fish Doctor the Lanteigne family, Ernie, Carol and son Jeff along with Jack Bussey. Staying close to home and pounding away on the brown trout located between Oswego and Nine mile point brought them a two day total score of 337.57 and cash and prizes totaling $5,175.00.
Third place in the Pros went to team Top Gun from Oswego. After a dismal day one Capt Greg Gehrig played follow the leader and made the long run north to Henderson where Trout One had racked up their first day score. It paid off and they boxed nice heavy kings giving them the largest score for day two and a 3rd place prize valued at $3,600, another record payout for this tournament.
Second place in the Ams went to a very familiar Screamer A-Tom-Mik Team, who seems to always be near the top of the pack.
Dave Antenori and teammates from Peckville Pa. reeled in a very impressive two day total of 261.69 points only missing first place by .54 points. Talk about close! This brought them a prize package worth $3,240.00
Third place Am went to John Jankowski's Team Triple J from Sloan NY. Their two day total brought them $2,100 in cash and product.
The entire week was just terrific! The Sportsman's Flea Market on Wednesday was a huge success. The Captains meeting was trouble free on Thursday. Two days of great competition with no protests and no controversy.
We served 350 chickens at the BBQ Friday night. We had hundreds of people on hand for the raffle drawings.
We saw an excellent turnout for the awards ceremony and the icing on the cake was a tearful presentation of a $5,000 PET Scan donated by Health Imaging and the Winning Pro Team Trout One, to Curt Maynes, son of Jeanette Maynes from New Haven NY.
Thanks to all the volunteers that made time in their busy schedule for this event. These individuals know who they are and should be proud of the what they helped accomplish. Thank you.
