Lake Ontario, Salmon River, Oak Orchard, Oswego River, Oneida Lake, Niagara River, Fishing Report 4/28/08
Sorry again for the lack of updates this past week. This is the craziest time of year for us as I am flat out on the river, trying to get the lake boat ready, getting the walleye boat ready, working on the next issue and of course Spring projects around the home. OK, enough whining on to the fishing.
This past week has been the best period. I say it every year but this is nuts. I scooped more fish in the last week then I did the entire months of January, February and March! Since April 1st, I have put the net under over 300 steelhead. This is about the best fishing I have ever seen. Almost like Alaska, almost.
Lot's of happy faces and stories to talk about for years to come. Eggs, flies, plugs, worms, spinners, you name it they bite it. We still have spawners on the gravel, spawnouts laying in the soft water and dropbacks laying in the fast pockets waiting for something to pounce on.
What a tremendous fishery we have here in New York State and yet so many still abuse it. I hate to bring up the bad side but, this past weekend we saw littering, snagging, lifting, chasing, people trashing the spawning grounds, keeping over their limit, fights and list goes on and on. Something what the nice weather brings with it, what a shame. please respect our river. I don't come to your town and S%&t please don't do it at mine.
Brown trout fishing along the southeastern shoreline of Lake Ontario has been fair to excellent from Sandy Pond to Sodus Bay. Smithwicks off the boards and Raider spoons in Black and silver are working best. Now is the time to get that boat in and do some near shore fishing.

Nate had his share as well.
Remember the area around the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Facility is off limits to boating. The restricted area stretches 1,000 yards offshore and extends from the Alcan plant to Sunset Bay.
The bullhead are biting on Sandy Pond in the back channels and around the boat slips. The best fishing is at night with worms being the top bait. Other areas include The Salmon River Estuary, The Grindstone Marsh and the Little Salmon River.
With the recent rains keeping the river flows up, this will prolong our season even more. There has never been a better time to come to the Lake O region and spend some quality time with family and friends. Lake rivers, streams, ponds, from steelhead to walleye and perch to pike, May is the month to fish!!
Recent catches!!!!!

Nine year old Dora with one of many fish she landed with her Granfather Larry and Uncle Nate.

Larry & Dora with a big one!

Nate had his share as well.

The fight!

The Victory!!

Reagan and Jim filled in on a last minute cancellation and were they ever happy they did. One of my best days of the season!!

What a Hog!!

Hype and Nancy Jo enjoyed the great weather and spectacular fishing one day last week and despite.......

someone eating bananas on the boat we still tortured them.

The weekend brought my three man crew Steve, Chuck & Gary to the river to play havoc with the fish and there guide. These guys have a blast and despite heavy crowds and bright sun we beat them bad with flies and eggs
Most of the fish fell prey to large bunny leeches, wooly buggers and egg pattern flies. if that didn't work they got the meat, white and pink egg sacs were more than they sould resist.

Steve with one of many he banged on day one.

The new guy, (3rd year) Lucky Chuck with one of the biggest of the trip.

Steve with a big beat up boar. Gary doesn't like his picture taken, but we did get a few of him.

There's Gary with a chromer!

The madness continues as Pinky took the first two in the dark today.

Kevin followed right behind with two more.
day The rains came, but the bite never left, here on the Salmon River!!!
I will be starting my lake season soon, but I will be back and forth for another two weeks.
If you want steelhead action like you have never seen before, I still have May 8, 13, & 14. You will not be dissapointed.
A very sincere thank you to all of my guests that have made this Winter/Spring 2008 river season one to remember. Not just in terms of fish, but crazy weather, 20 to 80 in two weeks, high and low water flows, the types of wildlife we saw along the way, dinner & drinks at night, cigars, food and good times. I am blessed. Thank you. Troy & Shelley
