Lake Ontario Fishing Report 5/31/09

Time to wrap up the month of May. where the heck did it go? If you look in the archives from last year conditons are just about the same now as then. Cold, Windy, Cold!!

The crazy winds have the fish scattered all over the lake. We kill them one day and then struggle the next. Overall the month of May has been real good but no consistent area, depth or baits. It changes day to day.

When we have good stable weather for a few days we can find some salmon or brown trout, But between the wind blowing hard from every direction, lightning, rain and cold fronts, things have been real interesting.

When the bite is on, great catches of kings salmon, are being found from nine mile point, west to the Fair Haven. Green and white Spin Dr's & Pro-Troll flashers with green flies are working, along with Northern King spoons in the die hard and NBK patterns Troll 2.3 to 3 miles per hour and work 80 to 200 feet of water.

The browns are tight are hanging in 5 to 50 feet of water and have been scattered from Fair Haven all the way north to Henderson.

My guys decided to enter Jon's Little Salmon River Brown Trout Derby on Saturday and we were into fish all morning. Big waves and a hard chop made speed impossible but we had them going good. We hit well over 20 fish, but could not find a big one. We still finished 6th out of 66, so we were happy. (See my results post for a complete listing.)

The riggers were the key for us as we stayed in the deep water (30 to 50 feet) hoping for the big guys. Dreamweaver spoons in  chicken Wing, Green Gator, Diehard, Hit Man and Tranny did the job for us. Short leads, 10 to 30 back and a slow troll 1.8 to 2.0 was the key to getting bites for us. Thanks again to Jon's and all the sponsors.

The Oswego river is pretty slow but a few walleye can still be found around the light house and the inside cut. Orange and gold and blue rapalas in size 18 have been the hot baits.

Oneida Lake walleye fishing has been slow during the day but their is a good night bite in the canal and out at buoy 121. Worms, jigs, blades and small rapalas are taking most of the fish.

Now is the time to schedule a lake charter for this summer. Take the kids fishing, it will be a quality experience that they will not forget.

Another reminder that the salmon river web cam will be shut down until early Septmber. Thank you again to the seven people that donated their hard earned money to help support it.
