Chautauqua County continues to be number ONE Spring Turkey producing county in New York

Spring has sprung in Chautauqua County New York, cool evening and warm days usher in a new beginning for western New York sportsmen. With trout season well under way, Lake Erie trophies small mouth bass season opening the first Saturday in May, walleye season starting on the same and spring turkey season opening on May 1st cabin fever is no longer welcome in Chautauqua.

Since 2003 Chautauqua County has lead all county’s in New York State in Spring Turkey harvest and with early season field scouting reports looking like its going to be another record season for Chautauqua County spring turkey hunters.

The 2008 dates for Youth Weekend are April 26th and 27th, which falls the weekend before opening day of the regular season. With the 2007 season seeing a decrease in spring birds taken across the State, Chautauqua County regained the top stop as number ONE spring turkey producing county.

Spring turkey season is the start of a busy hunting season in western New York. Between turkey in May and wood chucks in the summer, hunters have plenty of opportunity to find tune their skills waiting for the fall winds behind to blow.

Spring turkey hunting is still a popular outdoor activity for many New Yorkers and it looks like this spring should be a good one. There should be plenty of turkeys available to hunt Chautauqua County and DEC officials expects not only the youth hunt but the entire 2008 spring season to be productive.

From the Boutwell Hill to the Watts Flats Game Lands, there are over 21,000 acres of public hunting ground in Chautauqua County. No doubt, one of the reasons that Chautauqua County out produces every other county in the State of New York.
