A New State Record Archery Bear was taken in 2006.

A New State Record Archery Bear was taken in 2006.

Mike Maillet of Sparrowbush, NY has taken a bear that scores 22 1/16.

This is the new state archery record!

It was taken on October 15, 2006 in Orange County. It weighed 647 pounds.

Not only is this a new state archery record bear, it also ties the all time record for the biggest bear ever taken in New York.
That bear was taken by gun in 1995 in Greene County.
Both of these huge bears were taken in the Catskill mountain area of New York State.

A sound management program that protects this valuable resource is administered by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
The department has provided a balance between the numbers of bears and available bear habitat while keeping nuisance bear complaints to a minimum.

The New York State Big Buck Club, the official big game records keeper for New York State, scores both deer and bear using the Boone & Crockett scoring system.
This scoring procedure uses the combined length and width measurement of the skull.
The weight, although impressive on these big bears, is not a measurement that will remain as a permanent indicator of the size of a bear.
The skull measurement is the true indicator and will not change over time.

There are currently over 300 bears listed in the New York State Record Book in the Archery, Gun and Muzzleloader categories.

More information on the record book and the scoring procedure can be obtained from the web site at: www.nys-big-buck.org
