Salmon River Fishing Report 1/6/10

The New Year is here and old man winter is out in full force. Is it April yet??

Strong winds and below zero wind chills are making things just a little tough. We catch a few every trip out but nothing exciting.
Winter fishing…. Chip ice out of your guides, make a few casts, chip more ice and you are rewarded with an occasional hook up.

Weldon came back for revenge and landed two nice steelhead and this Coho. The year of Cohos. They just keep coming. We are getting at least one a trip.

Look at color of the belly on this male.

Beads, egg pattern flies, stoneflies and blue egg sacs are taking the majority of the fish.
The upper river is where the action is as we have heavy slush from Pineville down just about everyday.
This horrible 285 water flow will really limit things. Every year can't be like the last two.
We just have to deal with it or get the ferc license changed. I am old and tired and don't want to fight Brookfield power. Someone else should give it a try.
To help with the slush, try Pam cooking spray, Vaseline or Stanley’s ice off which is basically the same formula as chapstick.
We have plenty of safe ice just about everywhere but with the heavy snow load you have to be careful.

My January schedule is full but I have plenty of days in February and March. As for Spring 2010 I have: April 5, 6, 10, 11, 12 & May 8 & 9 as well as plenty of days for the 2010 lake season
