Fishing Report 12/24/09

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!!

Many of you are having troubles viwing the site with this program so I am trying to load it again.

Thank you for your patience.

Winter is officially here and the low cold water on the Salmon River has really slowed the activity down. Water temps continue to drop and slush is an everyday problem. Looks like a warm up for the weekend but nothing drastic.

With little or no current in most of the big holes, the trout have settled in for their winter naps and occasionally wake up to feed. We land 2 to 5 a trip which really is not that bad. Nothing like last year but still good fishing.

We went from a heavy 750 cfs to a low lean 335 cfs flow.  I have to wonder what ever happened to 400 or 500 which are wonderful winter flows.

I am told that the water flows are now being controlled from Glen Falls NY and not from Redfield. I am afraid we will see 285 cfs after the first of the year and that will shut us all down. I do see there is heavy rain in the forecast, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!

When they do bite fish are still hitting beads, egg sacs and egg pattern flies.  Blue white and pink have been the best colors.

Some anglers are hooking fish on stoneflies too.

Here are some photos from the past week.

Frank lasted a few hours on one of the coldest days of the year so far. We caught two including the big dark boar below and headed for lunch early

Tony & Joe had a great day and nice weather. I think it was the hats!

Jimmy and Jan spent three days with me and Jan is one tough girl. My hat is off to her. It was below or near zero every morning and she fished hard and it paid off. They had three good days. She is a keeper Jimmy. better take good care of her ;)

Bob Ellis brought his two boys, Brad & Brian on their first trip. It snowed all morning filling the boat with snow. The boys hung tough and were rewarded with a few fish on a brutal cold, windy, snowy day.

The new boat likes the snow!

FYI

I fished 7 of the last 8 days and while we are doing fine, I just don’t see the numbers like we did last year.

Two reasons:

  1. Last year was an exceptional year, perhaps the best ever. We can’t expect that all the time
  2. We had a low water fall and many, many fish were removed from the system. I for one would like to see no kill on trout from September 1 to November 1. Let me know what you think about this as I will be at a stakeholders meeting in a few weeks and we will be discussing 2012 regulations.

The Oswego River continues to fish well with a good mix of browns rainbows and steelhead. As the water flows recede look for more fish to drop back from the dam and into the lower pools and harbor.

Ice Fishing

It is On!

Sandy Pond has 6 good inches of ice and the perch are biting. Be careful wherever you go as early ice can be hazardous.
